Fosters Independence

The Montessori prepared environment allows children to be independent.  The shelves are built to a child’s height and the materials are meant to be manipulated by the children.

 

The teacher’s role is to be a guide and not to be the sole source of information.  With that in mind, Montessori learning materials are designed to be self-correcting to allow children to identify their mistakes without the need of an adult pointing them out. 

 

In a Montessori classroom, children are allowed to do for themselves what an adult would normally often do for a child.

When you enter a Montessori classroom, you will see the children engaged and focused on their work.  They can satisfy their curiosity and their desire to learn in an environment that is designed to support and meet those needs.  Their learning is not from listening to lectures, but from real and concrete experiences from the world around them.
